「味苦寒。主百病,除寒热邪气,逐六腑积聚,结固留癖,能化七十二种石。」
Bitter in flavor, cold. It treats the hundred diseases, removes cold-and-heat pathogens, drives out accumulations in the six bowels, bound and retained lumps, and can transform seventy-two kinds of stone.
RootBro's note — 'Softening hardness' is mangxiao's unique action — dahuang pushes, mangxiao softens. Together in Da Chengqi Tang they are the standard combination for bound dry stool, and neither can be dispensed with.

Its main constituent is sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄), an osmotic laxative. It creates a hypertonic environment in the intestine, preventing water absorption and drawing water from the tissues into the lumen, softening the stool.
Na₂SO₄ · 硫酸钠
Osmotic pressure ↑ → water retained in the intestinal lumen → stool softens (softening hardness, moistening dryness). SO₄²⁻ is not absorbed and acts along the whole intestine — a gentle but persistent effect that complements dahuang's stimulant draining.
The dahuang + mangxiao synergy: dahuang's anthraquinones stimulate intestinal movement (the power), mangxiao softens the stool mass (the physics). Together they solve 'bound dry stool' — one supplies the thrust, the other lowers the resistance. A classic example of mechanical logic in classical formula design.
