The ClassicThe original text

「味苦寒。主消渴热中,除邪气,肢体浮肿,下水,补不足,益气。」

Bitter in flavor, cold. It treats wasting thirst with heat in the center, removes pathogens, swelling of the limbs, brings water down, supplements insufficiency and boosts the qi.

RootBro's note — 'Clears heat without injuring yin' is zhimu's core advantage. In Baihu Tang, gypsum clears the heat while zhimu enriches the yin — heat-clearing and yin-protecting in perfect balance: great heat consumes the fluids, so while clearing heat you must replenish the yin fluids at the same time.

Key constituents timosaponins and mangiferin: the first inhibits Na⁺-K⁺-ATPase to reduce heat production; the second is anti-inflammatory and antipyretic, with estrogen-like activity that moistens the tissues.
Mangiferin · 芒果苷
Inhibits Na⁺-K⁺-ATPase → cellular heat production ↓ (cutting heat at the source, complementing gypsum's lower set-point). Partial estrogen-receptor agonism → mucous membranes moistened (answering 'moistening dryness'). Also activates insulin signaling → blood sugar ↓ (answering 'wasting thirst').
Zhimu's role in Baihe Zhimu Tang: the yin-deficiency internal heat of lily disease (akin to modern depressive-anxious states) needs zhimu to clear deficiency heat, not excess heat. The signature of deficiency heat: no sweat, heat in the palms and soles, worse at night — zhimu's indication, not gypsum's.
