The ClassicThe original text

「味苦寒。主五内邪气,胃中热气,面赤,酒疱齇鼻,白癞,赤癞,疮疡。」

Bitter in flavor, cold. It treats pathogenic qi in the five interiors, heat qi in the stomach, red face, wine-induced blotchy nose, white and red tinea, and sores and ulcers.

RootBro's note — 'Vexed and unable to sleep' is the core indication of Zhizi Chi Tang. Heat lodges in the chest and diaphragm — not in the intestines, with no abdominal excess — so zhizi clears and vents the pent-up heat while prepared soybean diffuses it outward: an elegant design that clears heat without injuring the stomach.
PhD InsightA systems-biology reading
Its key constituent geniposide hydrolyzes into genipin, with potent antipyretic, liver-protective and anti-inflammatory actions; it also crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts on the central nervous system.
Geniposide → Genipin · 京尼平苷 → 京尼平
Inhibits hypothalamic PGE₂ synthesis → fever falls. Activates bile-acid secretion → gallbladder and liver protected. Crosses the blood-brain barrier → central excitation suppressed → vexation relieved, spirit calmed. Three mechanisms behind 'clear heat, relieve vexation.'
The neurobiology of 'anguish in the heart': late in a heat illness the brain sits in a state of high excitation — an unnameable anxiety and restlessness. Genipin's central inhibition resembles a gentle sedative but causes no drowsiness, which explains Zhizi Chi Tang's clinical signature: it relieves vexation without sedating.
