The Classic The original text

「味甘平。主消渴,身大热,呕吐,诸痹,起阴气,解诸毒。」

Sweet in flavor, neutral. It treats wasting thirst, great heat of the body, vomiting, all blockages, raises the yin qi, and resolves all toxins.

RootBro's note — 'Stiffness of the neck and upper back, as if about to snap' is the core indication of Gegen Tang. Gegen specializes in the neck and back; modern research links it to improved vertebrobasilar blood supply, directly related to relief of neck-muscle spasm.
PhD Insight A systems-biology reading
Its key constituent puerarin is a natural beta-blocker that also dilates cerebral and coronary vessels, with selective benefit for microcirculation in the neck.
Puerarin · 葛根素
Partial beta-receptor blockade → vascular smooth muscle relaxes → vertebrobasilar blood flow ↑ → better supply to the neck and back muscles. It also activates GLUT4 → glucose uptake ↑ (answering the classic's 'wasting thirst').
Gegen's 'raise yang, stop diarrhea' in combined Taiyang–Yangming disease: puerarin regulates intestinal smooth muscle in both directions — it can lift the clear yang (stopping diarrhea) without disturbing normal peristalsis, a rare kind of gut-regulating herb in the classical formulary.
